If you run a pool, gym, or leisure centre, you already know what moisture does to a cheap locker. Rust bleeding down the change room floor. Locks that seize solid after one season. Powder coat peeling off in sheets. Then you're replacing the whole bank again, right when you'd budgeted for something else. Get the material right the first time and most of that just doesn't happen. Five years in, the change room still looks like somewhere a professional runs it, not something you're apologising for. This guide covers what actually matters: the material, the hardware, and how to lay out a change room that gets hammered every Saturday morning.
Standard steel lockers are built for dry rooms. Put them in a pool or gym change room and everything's working against them at once: humidity that never lets up, chlorine vapour, direct splash, constant use.
Powder coat holds up for a while. Then it chips, or scratches, and there's bare metal just sitting there exposed. Chlorine finds it fast. And rust doesn't stay put either, it spreads. Two or three years later, lockers that looked fine on day one are stained, seized shut, structurally on the way out.
That's a capital cost most facility managers would rather not repeat every few years. The fix isn't complicated: pick a material that doesn't corrode to begin with.
Not everything sold as "waterproof" holds up the same way in a wet change room. Three things worth checking before you sign off on an order.
High-Density Polyethylene is about as close to the obvious answer as this gets. Non-porous. Won't rust, swell, warp, or delaminate. Chlorine, salt air, standard cleaning chemicals, none of it touches it. The colour runs all the way through the panel too, so a scratch doesn't expose some different colour underneath. It just looks like a scratch.
Across Australia it's more or less the default spec now for aquatic centres, public pools, and coastal facilities.
IP55 means the locker takes a water jet from any direction. For poolside and change room use, that's the floor, not a bonus feature. It also means you can hose the whole bank down directly, which matters if your hygiene protocol calls for regular washdowns (most do).
The locker body only gets you halfway there. Hinges, latches, locking mechanisms all need to be marine-grade 316 stainless, not just "stainless," to actually resist chlorine and salt air. Standard 304 stainless or zinc-plated hardware corrodes in a pool environment, sometimes inside a single season. Check the hardware spec specifically. It's the detail suppliers leave off the brochure.
HDPE comes in two configurations. Which one you need really just comes down to where the lockers are going.

A waterproof body only gets you part of the way to a hygienic change room.
Getting the layout right in a busy change room is mostly a trade-off between capacity and floor space. A few things worth thinking through:
Standard depths run 300mm to 450mm. Go 450mm for a gym change room if people are hauling full gym bags around. For a pool, 300mm is usually enough.
This is honestly where HDPE earns its keep day to day.
It takes standard commercial disinfectants fine, chlorine-based ones included, with no damage to the material. There's no coating to strip, no bare metal to protect. A weekly wipe-down with diluted disinfectant covers most of the routine maintenance.
Full hose-down clean? Common in aquatic centre change rooms, and IP55-rated HDPE takes it without issue, no ingress, no damage. Steel's a different story. It needs careful drying after any wet clean, or rust starts in the joints within days.
Even graffiti and marker pen usually lift off with a solvent-based cleaner, no damage to the finish. Worth knowing if you run a public facility. Vandalism has a habit of coming back.
Warranty terms differ more than people expect between locker ranges, and the fine print is exactly where it matters for outdoor or high-moisture sites.
